Digital Fluency vs Digital Literacy

Digital Fluency vs Digital Literacy | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

I’ve been doing a bit of research on digital literacy/fluency over the past few months, wondering what initiatives and programs are currently being offered at our post-secondary institutions that build capacity for instructors to use digital tools effectively within a teaching & learning context.

Many organizations have identified a lack of digital literacy among post-secondary educators as a barrier to the adoption of educational technology. In 2014, the NMC Horizon Report (PDF) noted that;

Edtech Companies Are From Mars, Schools Are From Venus

Edtech Companies Are From Mars, Schools Are From Venus | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

"Edtech companies and K-12 schools have many of the same goals. They both want to see new technology implemented in the classroom in a way that makes the learning process more engaging for students and less labor-intensive for teachers. So why are relationships between companies and schools often so distant, even rocky?"

Education Technology and the Twenty-First-Century Skills Gap

Education Technology and the Twenty-First-Century Skills Gap | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
All too often in many countries, students do not get the education they must have to prosper in the twenty-first century, and countries are not finding adequate numbers of the skilled workers they need to compete. But innovative education technologies are beginning to show potential in helping close the twenty-first-century skill gap.

Finding ‘Personalized Learning’ and Other Buzzwords on the Gartner Hype Cycle

Finding ‘Personalized Learning’ and Other Buzzwords on the Gartner Hype Cycle   | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Education buzzwords come and go, just as the fads they sometimes represent.

For a variety of reasons, the buzz phrases also come to take on new meanings that were never intended originally, which makes it hard for educators, entrepreneurs and researchers to communicate clearly and hone in on what exactly they are trying to do and why. This is problematic. As Clayton Christensen recently said to me, just as people have taken the phrase “disruptive innovation” to justify whatever they already wanted to do, people are using the phrase personalized learning—and a whole host of other terms—in a similar manner.

Use of Twitter across educational settings: a review of the literature | International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education

Use of Twitter across educational settings: a review of the literature | International Journal of Educational Technology in Higher Education  | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The use of social media across the educational landscape is on the rise. Subsequently, the body of research on this topic is vibrant and growing. In this article, we present findings from a review of 103 peer-reviewed scientific studies published over the last decade (2007–2017) that address the use of Twitter for educational purposes across formal and informal settings. The majority of the studies reported in the literature are descriptive case studies carried out with students in North American and European higher education settings. Analysis of these studies signals Twitter as a useful tool for communication due to high accessibility, novelty, and real-time format. Students, teachers, and other stakeholders use it as a pedagogical tool to gain information, interact and engage with each other, participate in their respective communities of interests, and share their insights about specific topics. Moreover, Twitter has the potential to enhance students’ learning capabilities as well as improve their motivation and engagement due to its unique features and non-traditional teaching approach. Finally, our analysis advocates for carrying out further empirical studies focusing on digital trace data and inference, particularly in the developing countries.

Your research started over two years ago, and we have seen a few great headlines on its outcomes. One of the findings is that educators’ resistance to trying out new technology is linked to their ‘fear of looking stupid’ in front of their students.Can you tell us more about the background of the project, your research, and your expectations? Were there any surprises or any findings you did not anticipate?
