Is 3D printing suitable for Education? @mrkempnz

Is 3D printing suitable for Education? @mrkempnz | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

""3D printing IS a powerful learning tool! I have seen it now firsthand! It can empower learners as a piece of the design process by allowing them to create in a way that has never been possible before. Students can follow a process of identifying a problem, researching and designing a solution with the intention of creating a prototype or model in 3D printed form.

The actual print is a VERY small part of the process. When done well, the design process allows students to access learning in a very different way. Students in my school design using 123D Design and AutoCAD and they print on our 3D Printers (predominantly MakerBots) to demonstrate a physical prototype of a solution to their problem. It brings a design to life.""

Thanks Jason for the scoop,
I am in the IDT section. Manual arts used to be about making projects and learning hand skills. Now Industrial Design and Technology is about the design process. It appears to have moved from skills based discipline to an academic discipline. The focus in the Australian Curriculum is on design.
This article touches on how the 3Dprinting is not the only product, but an end product, the result of designing, thinking and documenting the process. This ties in with how IDT appears to be going, as I see it.
Making a product using a 3D printer is a great way of including incidental learning, A bit of literacy, maths, and a bit of design high level thinking added in too.

At this stage the 3D printers schools have access to are still pretty slow taking hours to print even the smallest design, while the students may not print the digital graphic they have created the production of said digital graphic is the most important part.

8 Design Steps for an Academic Makerspace - The Journal

8 Design Steps for an Academic Makerspace - The Journal  | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

"If you build it, will they come?

That is the question many schools have about finding room on campus for a "makerspace." The just-released 6th annual New Media Consortium Horizon Report K-12 Edition listed makerspaces as an emerging technology in the year-or-less adoption timeframe. "Makerspaces are increasingly being looked to as a method for engaging learners in creative, higher-order problem-solving through hands-on design, construction, and iteration," the report noted."
