Helllo World - Issue 19 June 2022

Helllo World - Issue 19 June 2022 | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

"Over the last three years, we’ve seen more than 7 million students around the world put down their schoolwork and take to the streets to demand climate change action. Could technology be the answer? This issue explores the interaction between sustainability and computing, from how we can interact with technology responsibly to its potential to mitigate climate change.

We delve into the research behind device-repair cafés and see repair put into action by a student in Malaysia for his local community, along with a deep dive into the question of technology obsolescence. We also share young people’s ideas for how technology can be used for good, showcasing sustainability-themed student projects and a school-based COP that was inspired by the annual UN conference.

Also in this issue:

* A physical computing challenge inspired by the TV show Baking Impossible
* Supporting a school in The Gambia to develop a computing curriculum
* Top tips for ensuring your primary e-safety curriculum is fit for purpose"

Age-Forward Cities for 2030 - Report

Age-Forward Cities for 2030 - Report | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Cities are ground zero for the demographic shift that is changing America and the world, and city leaders are just beginning to understand the promise of an engaged older population. The urban landscape already holds resources—human, organizational, and technological—that can transform aging lives. From intergenerational mixed-use neighborhoods, to smart city technologies and integrated housing and healthcare models, there is progress. But too many local leaders still overlook the connection between aging policies and their cities’ vitality and sustainability. They fail to consider their aging populations as they plan for economic development, and for housing, health, and infrastructure needs. Age-Forward Cities for 2030 offer a prescription for our urban future. By integrating population aging into strategies for growth, inclusion, and resiliency, cities can implement solutions that will strengthen how we grow, build, and care for generations to come.

31 Day Zero Waste Challenge - For Kids!

31 Day Zero Waste Challenge - For Kids! | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
I have been hard at work on this 31-day challenge, and I am so excited to share it with you! Rebecca, a middle school math and science teacher in the bay area, had a fabulous idea for Zero Waste October. It would be full of activities for students and teachers to talk about the global trash problem.

It's similar to Plastic-Free July but focused more on students. Since July is in the summer, it's difficult to get kids involved. When Rebecca reached out to me about crafting a curriculum, I jumped at the chance.

It's inspired by the 30-Day Challenge I created with Andrea from Be Zero, but with a lot of new challenges specifically for students and kids. I really hope you enjoy it!

Grab a copy of the booklet below and save a copy of the calendar. Set it as your phone or tablet background so you can easily keep up.

Some leaders make change look easy. While most strive to drive change through persuasion, they stoke our imaginations and inspire us to embrace daring new visions. How do they do it? Is there a secret formula or are they just lucky? The simple answer is yes. But their luck isn’t random. They create it from the inside out using a step-by-step process that anyone can learn. This article is the first installment of an ongoing series in which John Marshall Roberts will share this “secret formula” for becoming a transitional leader.

Computer Science for Good - Code.org

Computer Science for Good - Code.org | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Computer science is a foundational subject in today’s world that will benefit students in any career path. It not only gives them room to flex their creativity but also equips them with the tools to tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems.

How computer science is used and applied in the real world is a crucial part of learning computer science. That is why we’re focusing on #CSforGood as the theme for the Hour of Code this year. We can help students understand some of the challenges that people around the world face and inspire them to think more deeply about the role computer science can play in creating a more equitable and sustainable world.

How to make open educational resources sustainable

How to make open educational resources sustainable | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Open educational resources (OER) have undeniable benefits – they allow educators to use affordable (mostly free) learning resources, they can be easily updated or customised according to their purpose, they make education more accessible to a wider group of learners and allow for creativity in course design. The low or no cost aspect of OER is often mentioned as one of their biggest assets. Although OER are mostly free to use, this does not mean they are free to produce and maintain, which often raises the issue of their sustainability.

There Are So Many Amazing Ways to Fight Food Waste -- This Documentary Is Here to Show You How | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Tasha Leow's curator insight, June 29, 2017 10:49 AM
With delicacies at our fingertips and recipes beyond our wildest imagination, food can be recycled from scraps. Reducing our food consumption starts small. The key is to use bright tips to convert leftovers into something edible so as to prevent an excess of food wastage while helping to save the environment. In recent years, food consumption footprint has taken the globe by a storm, and hence there is a rising need to fix our bad habit and stop allowing our earth to bear the brunt of our decisions.
Lim Li Fan Levant's curator insight, August 18, 2017 7:26 PM
I think that food waste can be reduced in Singapore. After all, as a small country, measures to reduce food waste can be implemented more effectively as the population is more concentrated. While not many people are enthusiastic about eating unusual parts of an animal to reduce food waste, I think that simpler measures such as buying the appropriate amount of food to be eaten within their shelf life is a basic and simple means to reduce food waste. Such a measure helps people to understand how much food they really need and remind them not to buy too much food, resulting in food waste, and can also help them to reduce the amount of money spent on food to be used in other areas.
