A New Pedagogy is Emerging... and Online Learning is a Key Contributing Factor | teachonline.ca | #ModernPedagogy #ModernLEARNing | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

At first, many faculty sought to replicate online what they normally do in a classroom. They soon discovered this was not a strategy that was practical, as not all students could access synchronous classes reliably and many had challenges, such as other siblings or parents needing access to the technology, the costs of broadband Internet access exceeding their ability to pay, or were in different time zones. Nor was it efficient.

In fact, what faculty began to discover is what has been known for some time. There is “no empirical evidence that says that classroom instruction benefits students (compared to alternatives) from a learning achievement perspective”, a finding from the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance at Concordia University. Faculty began to experiment with personal challenges, small group work, project-based learning and the recording of short videos. They began to explore pedagogy, the science and art of instruction based on design.

Faculty sought help from colleagues with previous experience teaching online, looking for evidence for what worked in their discipline. They were inspired by examples for creative arts and music, where Zoom rehearsals and performances produced remarkable and life-changing events. Some discovered open education resources, materials, labs, videos, simulations, games, that helped them find new ways of engaging their online learners. Some truly innovative design ideas emerged, such a course on COVID-19 in which a different “angle” (epidemiology, economics, psychology, virology, politics) became the focus for each week taught by a faculty member from that discipline.

Katherine Browne's curator insight, May 10, 2020 4:39 AM
This article talks about learning not just being about - blending learning, personalising it or differentiation for learning, but how learning needs to actually be defined.
The article discuss' differentiation is to design experiences that maximise student growth. Technology is one of these elements that can redesign experiences. Technology can be a critical component of blended learning, but self paced learning in technology is not inspiring. I take form these comment, that you can not just substitute technology into the learning and expect higher order thinking. As a pre-service teacher we need to be aware that technology can demotivate a learner and can be uninspiring. Students need to feel intrinsically motivated on a topic to benefit from deep learning. Placing a student on a research this topic could be viewed as enhancement in the SAMR model, but to transfer their learning, they need to want to investigate further.
Take for example in the section 'How these components Intersect' this demonstrates that the teachers collaboration benefited the students learning. The development of a bank of resources that cater for all types of learners and all areas of differentiation, personalised learning and blended learning shows the teachers 'know their students and how they learn'. This meets all aspects of the SAMR model as well as the Goals in The Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. Ultimately the students are the winners as their experiences are authentic and deep.

Learning there forth needs to be active, social and meaningful!

Bringing Students Into Professional Development | #StudentVoice #ModernEDU | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Professional development is evolving. Slowly but surely, schools and organizations are attempting to move away from the typical sit-and-get workshop and creating formats that promote problem solving and boost participant engagement. This has led to a rise in PD that makes educators the drivers of innovation.

This trend is awesome.

The problem: Participants are forced to make a lot of assumptions about their students because they’re not given a chance to include those students in the process.

If you work in social media, explaining your job can be a frustrating experience - especially to family members who probably assume that you just use Facebook all day.

For Community Managers, in particular, there tends to be a lot of confusion over exactly what the role entails.

To clear things up, I thought I’d delve into the world of community management and find out why it’s becoming increasingly important for brands of all kinds.

Here’s a beginner’s guide.

What does a community manager do?

The role of a community manager is to act as the bridge between a brand and the community it is aiming to create (i.e. a loyal audience or group of core consumers connected by a similar interest).

They should be the brand’s ambassador, engaging with potential customers and building relationships with existing ones. They are also focused on gauging sentiment around the brand, using social listening tools in order to monitor feedback and engagement.

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe

Digital is making students masters of their own learning universe | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

New ways of learning, owing much to digital technology and scientific research, are empowering students and business trainees.

The challenge we face is that learning is often not built to fit the learners,” says Dr Itiel Dror, a cognitive neuroscientist from University College London. “There is a mismatch between the learning and the learners. Learning must be ‘brain friendly’, so it’s engaging, motivating and effective.

The sector is being forced to step up its game. Since education operates in a world where millennials now check their phones more than 100 times a day, e-learning solutions must compete aggressively with the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and Candy Crush, which are just a distracting tap away.

“The use of technology, by itself, does not enhance learning, it depends on how it’s utilised. That is a great challenge and we are far from using technology to its full potential,” says Dr Dror, a world expert on learning.

The problem lies with most educational systems, globally. Since Victorian times, they’ve been creating mostly dependent learners. Beyond the classroom, students are like fish out of water, gasping for air. They’re reliant on the oxygen of teachers, discipline and schooling to acquire new skills.

This isn’t necessarily creating self-starters thirsty for knowledge and masters of their own learning.

Self-directed strategies are increasingly needed because a dependent-learner strategy cannot keep pace with the latest business developments, says Vincent Belliveau, executive vice president of Cornerstone OnDemand.

The true democratisation of education is now in full swing. “If we want to reach a level of greater learning empowerment, we must provide learners with the authority to be able to curate their own content and the resources to facilitate this. It’s only then that we will truly find learning empowerment,” Mr Belliveau concludes. The tools are all in place. It’s only a matter of time.

Critical Thinking: How to Grow Your Child's Mind

Critical Thinking: How to Grow Your Child's Mind | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Is critical thinking for kids? Absolutely! The art of critical thinking begins in childhood. What kind of thinker is your child?  Does he believe everything on TV?  Does she always figure out how to get what she wants?

Does he ask questions?  Does she go along with what her friends suggest?  You can help develop your child’s critical thinking skills by learning a few key guidelines!

Whether your child is just starting summer vacation or in the midst of the school year, parents can help keep minds active in fun ways. Critical thinking skills don’t fully develop until adolescence, but the foundations for good thinking develop in younger children.

The nonprofit Foundation for Critical Thinking cultivates core intellectual virtues that lead to fair-minded thinking.  They have identified three ways K-6 children typically think.

Changing The Learning Process

Until now, this level of personalization has been limited to small classrooms, though AI makes every classroom feel like a small one. AI systems analyze students' progress on a scale that teachers alone cannot, effectively minimizing the student-teacher ratio problem. AI systems also erase distance. Learning happens anywhere at any time.

Another benefit of AI-augmented education is that it isn't judgemental. Constructive criticism from an AI tutor can feel less intimidating than a fellow human. Students, especially the underserved, who may not be accustomed to such feedback, are likely to respond more positively to this feedback and are thus more likely to seek it out in the future. Feedback from AI systems is instantaneous and thereby extremely effective and can be acted on immediately.

How to become a Modern Professional Learner – Modern Workplace Learning Magazine | #ModernLEARNing | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

What has become very clear over the last 11 years is that many individuals are now using a wide selection of web-based resources, tools, and services to learn in new ways, and in doing so they have become highly independent continuous learners.

I call these individuals, Modern Professional Learners.

These Modern Professional Learners don’t just have a modern toolset for learning – i.e. they don’t just rely on educational or training tools, but they make use of a wide variety of everyday tools – they also have a new mindset about how and when learning happens for, at and through work, as well as a new learning skillset.

Modern Professionals learn for many different reasons – not just because they have to, to become competent and compliant in their organisation – but because they want to, for their own personal and professional reasons. Here are some of those reasons:

To acquire a new body of knowledge or a new skill

To solve a performance problem

To improve the work they currently do

To keep up to date with what’s happening in their industry or professional

To prepare for the future

Where does machine learning fit in the education sector? | #ModernEDU

Where does machine learning fit in the education sector? | #ModernEDU  | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Those who understand learning and work with young people know that in an uncertain world of rapid change we urgently need to be helping learners to take risks, to work in teams, to develop a greater understanding of the way systems and societies work, and to become more creative. Fundamentally, these things have been washed out of the system in favour of a ‘learn fact, repeat fact’ model.

To get the best out of this technology in the future, educators need to turn the current systems upside down.

In previous technology developments in education – such as multimedia, whiteboards or the internet – initially, most worried that they would upset the world they were used to and feared for their jobs. Only a few imagined how these technologies could change the world and make things better. In reality, new technologies are typically highjacked to inappropriately maintain the status quo and end up powering the exam sausage factory.

Moving forward into 2017, it is not the tech itself that needs to change. In most aspects of our lives, technology has made significant changes (for good and bad), but in education, particularly schools, there is still stubborn resistance.

To maximise the use of technology in the future, educators need to embrace these technologies that can change the world and make things better. Moving forward into 2017, it is not the technology itself that needs to change, but rather people's attitudes, particularly in education where there is still often stubborn resistance.
Belinda 's curator insight, June 12, 2017 12:44 AM
Perhaps I am being naive but if 21st Century Teachers are to be teaching 21st Century Students with 21st Century technology in a 21st Century Society isn't it time for a 21st Century Education System?  It seems that exams and assignments necessary to allocate a student a grade that is then provided to parents/caregivers is still what drives the education system.   Schools/Teachers plan their units based on the assessment items and teach students according to 'what is on the exam'. Is quantifying a child's knowledge for statistics as important as generating higher order thinking, creativity, cultural and ethical awareness and active citizenship?  Surely there is another way of reporting on a student's progression during their education?  And this isn't the School/Teachers fault - society has become so set on students being labelled as an 'A' student or B, C, D etc that this is what is expected.

There is a high amount of anxiety in children from a very young age and I have seen students become quite confused and anxious when there is no 'correct answer' to a question.  Does this stem from crushing the imagination and being told that there is a certain way things must be done?  Why not nurture the creativity in children and we may have them building robots and inventing devices that can change the world by the time they are 10 years old.

If teachers are to implement the technology to its full advantage then measuring a students' success, knowledge and how to apply this knowledge needs to change in line with the technology.  In such a dramatically changing world, 'assessing' a student hasn't changed for decades - they are still assessed by how much they can cram for an exam and then that information is often forgotten and not used again or when it is required it is re-learnt.  Lets get students creating and using their knowledge more and not be so subject specific - in the real world we use and apply a set of skills not just a subject. So why not start giving students 1-2 projects that encompass a holistic view of the subjects we teach (science, maths, english, humanities, social sciences, art, information technology) and have students use technology to implement the four C's - critical thinking and problem solving, communicating, collaboration, creativity and innovation. While we're at it why not report on the four C's and nothing else.
