Microsoft has warned of new threats impacting blockchain technologies and Web3 including "ice phishing" campaigns. 

The blockchain, decentralized technologies, DeFi, smart contracts, the concept of a 'metaverse' and Web3 -- the decentralized foundation built on top of cryptographic systems that underlay blockchain projects -- all have the potential to produce radical changes in how we understand and experience connectivity today.

Die unter Beschuss geratene Computing- und Cloud-Größe bietet nicht nur Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS), Anwendungen für das Supply-Chain-Management sowie sein Oracle getauftes Tool für Smart Contracts an. Jetzt soll noch ein Browser hinzukommen – vorausgesetzt, das Unternehmen setzt die Idee in dem Patent auch um.

Browserdaten dauerhaft in der Blockchain

Das beschreibt die Aussendung von Nutzerinformationen in ein globales Netzwerk von Knotenpunkten, um sie dort zu speichern und zu verarbeiten. Bei einem Browser wären das also Daten über die aktuelle Session, Bookmarks, installierte Plugins, Sicherheitsupdates sowie Standortdaten und der Verlauf über besuchte Seiten. Wer sich ein bisschen mit Blockchains auskennt, weiß, dass Daten, die in die Blockchain geschrieben werden, auch da bleiben und nachverfolgt werden können. Überlegt euch also schon mal eine Menge neue Varianten von: „Da habe ich aus Versehen drauf geklickt.“

F-Secure's Mikko Hypponen tells SCMagazineUK.com how the company is now tracking ransomware Bitcoin wallets to reveal the huge amounts of money the gangs are making.

Could we ever put an end the blight of ransomware?
Are we about to witness a ransomware unicorn? According to Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of Finnish F-Secure, we are. But there's a caveat. 

A unicorn is a startup business which has received the valuation of a US$ 1 billion dollars (£757 million) or more. Think AirBnB, Uber, or Spotify.

In an interview with SCMagazineUK.com, Hypponen explained: "Bitcoin is based on Blockchain, and Blockchain is a public ledger of transactions. So all Bitcoin transactions are public. Now, you don't know who is who. But we can see money moving around, and we can see the amounts."

Bitcoin has not only changed the economics of cyber-crime by providing crooks with an encrypted, nearly anonymous payment system autonomous from any central bank. It's also changed researchers' ability to track how much money criminals are making.

Hypponen detailed how F-Secure is tracking over 100 wallets, the biggest of which contains over 12,000 Bitcoins (over £5 million). And interestingly, Hypponen says there appears to be a lot of gangs who aren't cashing out.

Scam artists have taken advantage of a contract migration initiative to swindle NFTs out of users in an opportunistic phishing attack.

Last week, NFT marketplace OpenSea announced the rollout of contract migrations and an upgrade to make sure inactive, old NFT listings on Ethereum expire safely and to allow OpenSea to "offer new safety features in the future."

The contract migration timeline was set from February 18 to February 25. 

NFT holders are required to make the change, and OpenSea published a guide to assist them. After the deadline, any listings that were not migrated would expire, although they could be re-listed after this window without further fees. 

However, an attacker saw an opportunity to cash in. Check Point Research has suggested that phishing emails were sent to users, linking them to fraudulent websites.

There has been a lot of hype around blockchain technology, including predictions for how it can make communications and data sharing more secure.

There are exciting possibilities for blockchain as a valuable platform for security professionals to protect important data. Yet the key features that advocates point to, such as the ability for participants to remain anonymous while sharing data with one another, can actually increase security risks for certain applications if not properly addressed. Because there is no platform with a concrete solution for validating the identity of participating entities, some blockchain technologies will be vulnerable to bad actors.

The DAO stands for the “Distributed Autonomous Organization,” and while that could very well refer to anything from a blockchain car-share app to a hive of honey bees, this rather boring title stands for something truly remarkable: the first unmanned investment portfolio. It is a proof of concept for what many believe will be the future of finance, with software organizing and overseeing an investment strategy developed through semi-democratic input from the collected investors. It’s secured by the much-ballyhooed Ethereum platform, using a cryptocurrency called Ether as its trading currency, and at first everything seemed to be proceeding according to plan. It was a confirmation of the promise of the blockchain, and proof that the future really is near at hand!

Then, just days after that DAO’s public launch, a lone hacker managed to digitally make off with more than $50 million-worth of Ether, or roughly a third of the overall capital the DAO had raised. More than a setback, this was an existential problem: This was the one, specific thing that was supposed to be impossible under the supervision of the blockchain. Despite all the efforts detailed below, make no mistake: the DAO is dead. What’s important now is containing the damage, and stopping it from ruining trust in Ethereum as a whole.

The value of the digital currency Ethereum has dropped dramatically amid an apparent huge attack targeting an organisation with huge holdings of the currency.

The price per unit dropped to $15 from record highs of $21.50 in hours, with millions of units of the digital currency worth as much as $50 million stolen at post-theft valuations.

At a pre-theft valuation, it works out as a staggering $79.6 million.

Ethereum developers have proposed a fix that they hope will neutralise the attacker and prevent the stolen funds from being spent.

The core Ethereum codebase does not appear to be compromised.
