Free Technology for Teachers: How Vocabulary Lists Help Students Conduct Better Searches :: Richard Byrne

Free Technology for Teachers: How Vocabulary Lists Help Students Conduct Better Searches :: Richard Byrne | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"One of the things that I often make my students do when they're conducting online research about a topic is to make a list of all of the terms and words they know that are associated with that topic. Google's old Wonder Wheel product was a helpful aid in that process as was the now defunct Wiki Mind Map. In any case, making lists of vocabulary terms can help students recall bits of information that then helps them in formulating and refining search queries.

I made this pre-search checklist a few years ago as a tool to help students think about what they know about a topic before they begin searching online. One of my ninth grade students computer science students used the third part of that checklist, "what are the words or phrases other people would use to describe your topic?" this morning when he was trying to come up with some ideas for a meditation app that he's designing and will eventually build with the MIT App Inventor. His answers and subsequent search took him in slightly new design direction."

Placing a tablet or computer on a students desk and expecting them to take off on their own to a planet full of learning excitement is not how technology in the classroom works. In the classroom, the tablet is only a tool when the student uses it as such, and becomes engaged with the content objective ordained by the lesson. In my experience, If my directions and assignment are rudimentary and vague, the student will become bored and stray from the objective. I'd like to share the ideas provided in this article because they are really useful in the classroom. If the assignment involves doing research on the causes of WW2, the students will find a sea of resources online. We ought to guide the student and create a mental guideline they must follow. For instance; David is working on the latter assignment. Now that David found a few sites with reliable information, lets take his learning to a higher level and have him tell you, the teacher, what made him choose one source over the other and how this will help his paper flourish to be informative and accurate.

Richard Byrne: Free Technology for Teachers: Have Students Make Lists Before Starting Web Search

Richard Byrne: Free Technology for Teachers: Have Students Make Lists Before Starting Web Search | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

"Our students have become accustomed to entering a search into Google as soon as they are confronted by a question to which they don’t have an answer on the tips of their tongues. However, if they’re forced to take a few minutes before they search, they often find that they already know the answer. This is why a pre-search checklist should include listing what you already know about a topic. This list can be generated from memory or from notebooks (physical and digital). Not only does this process refresh students' memories, it also saves time in the long-run because they aren't spending time searching for information that they already have."

Google Launches First-Ever Game Based on Google Search Trends

Google Launches First-Ever Game Based on Google Search Trends | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
How much do you know about this year’s top search trends?

Test your knowledge of Google Search in 2018 by taking the new ‘Game of the Year’ quiz.

Every year Google releases a roundup of top search trends, but this is the first time the company has developed a game based on search data.

The way it works is simple:

Answer a series of questions about this year’s trending searches
Collect points for correct answers
Unlock harder questions by progressing through the game
A special bonus round at the end ups the difficulty even more
After three wrong answers, it’s game over

Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Search Strategies Students Should Try

Free Technology for Teachers: Ten Search Strategies Students Should Try | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
Students often think that because they can type a phrase into Google or saying something aloud to Siri they know how to search. Of course, any teacher who has heard a student say "Google has nothing on this" or "there's no information about my topic" knows that students don't inherently know how to search despite growing up in a world filled with Google and Siri. When your students need help formulating or refining a search, have them review the following ten tip. Better yet, have them review these tips before starting their next searches.
