Flipped Instruction

Flipped Instruction | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

(Ken Ehrmann) My flipped experience:
I have used flipped instructions for a few years now in my fifth grade classroom.  I have also created lessons for other classrooms K-4, specific lessons for graduate courses, and technology tutorials for teachers.  Below you will find my "top five" and active button's to take you directly to all my playlists.  Additionally, the Youtube icon on every webpage takes you directly to my channel.

Everything Teachers Need to Flip Their Classrooms

Everything Teachers Need to Flip Their Classrooms | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

Flipped learning or Flipped classroom or is a methodology, an approach to learning in which technology is employed to reverse the traditional role of classroom time. If in the past, classroom time is spent at lecturing to students , now in a flipped model, this time is utilized to encourage individualized learning and provide one-on-one help to students, and also to improve student-teacher interaction. While the instructional or teachable content is still available in class, however this content is mainly designed in such a way to be accessed outside class which is a great way for struggling students to learn at their own pace.

Today we spent sometime sifting through our Flipped Classroom section here in EdTech and mLearning and curated for you the resources below. These include tools, apps, video guides, tutorials and illustrative visuals to help teachers learn about and integrate the flipped learning concept in their instruction.

The Flipped Classroom model is changing the ways students learn and teachers teach. When you flip your classroom, you offer your students rich, engaging material to consider at home, and you use class time to help them interact with the ideas. Lecturing during class time is minimized and students have a teacher nearby when they are doing work and most likely to need guidance.

The key to "flipped" is to rethink who has control of content and learning. These are some great tactics to help move instruction toward more student-led learning.

Why Teachers Matter More in a Flipped Classroom

Why Teachers Matter More in a Flipped Classroom | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it

The reason Flipped Learning makes teachers more valuable is that it changes the dynamic of the classroom. No longer is content delivery the focus of the class, nor is the teacher’s main responsibility the dissemination of knowledge. Instead, teachers take on the role of a facilitator of learning. They can work with students in small groups and have more one-on-one interactions. The simple act of removing the direct instruction (lecture) from the whole group changes the dynamic of the room and allows the teacher more time to personalize and individualize the learning for each student. Each student gets his/her own education tailored to their individual needs. Instead of a one size fits all education, each student gets just what they need when they need it. So if you are flipping your class, know that your role is more valuable than just a stream of knowledge. You…Connect, Listen, Push, Go Deeper, Laugh, Interact, Inspire, Play, Provoke, Encourage, and Motivate. You are a teacher!

5 Ways to Address Student Resistance in the Flipped Classroom

5 Ways to Address Student Resistance in the Flipped Classroom | Moodle and Web 2.0 | Scoop.it
The flipped classroom is one type of active learning environment. It’s dynamic, it’s engaging, and it's “messy”. Here are five strategies to get going.

Indeed a great idea and I have been trying to practice it seriously in my classes too. The first challenge is to refocus the diversity among the students into a shared concern. The second challenge for me in India is their varied cultural backgrounds including their native languages. English may facilitate but cannot reproduce the nuances of our debates. Thirdly the subject of filmmaking that I teach/ engage with has few rules today in terms of application-of-knowledge orientations. Sometimes it seems that 'the good old adage - practice is the only way to perfection!'

Its a great idea to start the new school year as you mean to go on. Even if you only have time to show your students a screenshot or a quick screencast of the activities or software you will be using later, it will help to capture their attention and hopefully get them looking forward to your next class!

Not a fan based on my children's experience with the whole thing. It does not work the way it states. The classroom becomes a time of reteaching what was supposedly learned from the video the night before. The flipped classroom needs an incredible amount of training with highly skilled, and motivated teachers. I am not a fan.

Am always interested in the student (and parent) voice! Thank you for that insight D Cashmore. I tend to agree with your view on the skill needed to implement an experiential cycle of learning that is effective for the students' learning.
