Collaborative annotation, as stated by Hypothes.is, "makes reading active, visible, and social, enabling students to engage with their texts, teachers, ideas, and each other in deeper, more meaningful ways."

Critical reading--active engagement and interaction with texts--is essential to your academic success at Harvard, and to your intellectual growth.  Research has shown that students who read deliberately retain more information and retain it longer. Your college reading assignments will probably be more substantial and more sophisticated than those you are used to from high school. The amount of reading will almost certainly be greater.  College students rarely have the luxury of successive re-readings of material, either, given the pace of life in and out of the classroom.

The scheme has been approved by the National Foundation for Education Research (NfER) and Oxford University Press have now aligned their reading levels to this criterion scheme. Also (did we mention?) the scale is free to download as a PDF along with a teachers guide (see links below), which gives a clear and concise introduction to Big Reading and the key strategies used.

Reading is reading. By understanding that letters make sounds, we can blend those sounds together to make whole sounds that symbolize meaning we can all exchange with one another.

Without getting too Platonic about it all, reading doesn’t change simply because you’re reading a text from another content area. Only sometimes it does.

Science content can often by full of jargon, research citations, and odd text features.

Social Studies content can be an interesting mix of itemized information, and traditional paragraphs/imagery.
