The Weaponization of Education Data

The Weaponization of Education Data | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As in previous years, it would be quite easy to fill a whole article in this series on “data insecurity,” on the data breaches and cyberattacks that continue to plague education – both schools and software. The issue extends well beyond education technology, of course, and in 2017 we witnessed yet again a number of high profile incidents (including some corporate admissions of breaches that had happened in years past): that over 140 million Social Security Numbers and other personal data had been stolen in a data breach at Equifax, for starters; that every single account at Yahoo – some 3 billion in all – had been affected in its 2013 breach.

The Data Workout: How It's Impacting Teaching and Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"If you think data—in education, or any field—is cut and dry, think again. Working with data in the classroom, especially, can be either exhausting or exhilarating—depending on your fitness level. Data can be big, but also quite small. It’s often quantitative, but is increasingly qualitative."

Completing the Loop: Returning Meaningful Learning Analytic Data to Teachers

Completing the Loop: Returning Meaningful Learning Analytic Data to Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
PURPOSE
This project aims to develop a better understanding of learning analytics and the ways in which analytics can be interpreted, applied and actioned by teachers to improve teaching and learning practices.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The great diversity of the student body in Australian universities is reflected in students' ages, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, motivations and experiences with technology. University teachers are also increasingly reliant on – and expected to use – a range of technologies to support student learning both on and off campus. In designing and delivering online learning activities to meet diverse student needs, teachers commonly face educational challenges. This project will identify common problems faced by teachers and students when learning online, and determine the types of learning analytics teachers would find useful to effectively address these problems.

'It is becoming evident that big data alone won’t be able to fix education systems. Decision-makers need to gain a better understanding of what good teaching is and how it leads to better learning in schools.'

Digital Media + Learning: The Power of Participation

I want to take a moment to examine how data collection has changed for us who teach and assess students.

In the digitally augmented classroom, there should be concern for both corporate privacy and interpersonal privacy. While we have limited control over the corporate tracking and data-collection that takes place, it is possible to allow varying levels of interpersonal privacy in the digital classroom. To make participation highly visible, down to seeing who contributed what line in a paper or slide in a slideshow, brings in echos of the dreaded panopticon.

Big data: Ten level taxonomy in learning | Donald Clark Plan B

Big data: Ten level taxonomy in learning | Donald Clark Plan B | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Big Data, at all sorts oflevels in learning, reveals secrets we never imagined we could discover. It reveals things to you the user, searcher, buyer and learner. It also reveals thing about you to the seller, ad vendors, tech giants and educational institutions. Big data is now big business, where megabytes mean megabucks. Given that less 2% of all information is now non-digital, it is clear where the data mining will unearth its treasure- online. As we do more online, searching, buying, selling, communicating, dating, banking, socializing and learning, we create more and more data that provides fuel for algorithms that improve with big numbers. The more you feed these algorithms the more useful they become.

Extreme learning analytics and student consent

Extreme learning analytics and student consent | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I’ve had various discussions recently about students consenting to learning analytics and whether they should be able to opt out. Institutions are understandably concerned not only to do the right thing ethically for their students but, perhaps more pressingly, to comply with legal requirements. The imminent imposition of the General Data Protection Regulation brings stricter data protection for citizens in the European Economic Area and is concentrating minds across Europe.

Stanford Calls for Responsible Use of Student Data in Higher Ed (EdSurge News) | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As college students click, swipe and tap through their daily lives—both in the classroom and outside of it—they’re creating a digital footprint of how they think, learn and behave that boggles the mind.

“We’re standing under a waterfall, feasting on information that’s never existed before,” said Mitchell Stevens, a sociologist and associate professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). “All of this data has the power to redefine higher education.”

10 Ways Data Can Sabotage Your Teaching

10 Ways Data Can Sabotage Your Teaching | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Functionally, the purpose of assessment is to provide data to revise planned instruction.

In seeing what a student understands, the best path for moving forward towards mastery can be planned based on those results—the “data,” as it were.

While there are inherent (and perhaps crippling) flaws with any form of assessment (what is the best way to determine what a student understands?), assessment design is a topic for another day. For now, it can help to simply understand data better—for its benefits and perhaps more importantly, its limits.
