Disabling video may be better for online teaching and collaboration | Donald Clark Plan B

Disabling video may be better for online teaching and collaboration | Donald Clark Plan B | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
It is often assumed that online collaboration, teamwork and communications is inferior to face-to-face equivalents as we miss the visual cues, facial, body language and so on. His would suggest that collaborative teamwork or meetings may be better with VIDEO ON, as opposed to JUST AUDIO.

Yet, this fascinating paper from Tomprou et al. (2021) at Carnegie Mellon, who looked at group ability to solve a range of different problems, found something quite counterintuitive. Visual cues have no effect on collaborative work. In fact, teams without visual presence were more successful, not only in synchronising their vocal cues but also speaking in turns and on solving problems. The authors rightly claim that this calls into doubt the conventional wisdom that you need video support.

Three Good Places to Find Music and Sounds for Multimedia Projects

Three Good Places to Find Music and Sounds for Multimedia Projects | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Two weeks ago my tip of the week prompted a bunch of questions from readers regarding where to find and how to use music in multimedia projects. Much like with videos watched on YouTube or streamed through Netflix, just because you can listen to a piece of music online that doesn’t mean you necessarily have the rights to re-use it in a multimedia project. That’s why I recommend trying to find music and sound effects that are either in the public domain or have a Creative Commons license that allows for re-use. To that end, here are three good sources that I recommend.

Music always enhances.   Never put too much information on a slide.  That's what talking is for, and I like to keep them up only 10-15 seconds so you keep people's interest.

In my work as an educational technologist in Higher Education (and with academic/teaching experience in HE) I am more frequently receiving queries and requests from teaching staff who want to make a video of their lecture so it can be available to their students on their module site in the institutional VLE. A request to which I respond with the following (or thereabouts) for them to consider:

A great way to create an engaging learning experience for your audience is to include audio narration with your explanatory text and visuals. You could narrate the entire course, or use audio for character scenarios only, or include first-person accounts from learners or subject matter experts (SMEs). The good news is, today’s e-learning tools make it easier than ever to add audio to your online courses. Let’s look at some basic tips for preparing and recording high-quality audio narration.

Find OER | Open Professionals Education Network

Find OER | Open Professionals Education Network | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Reusing existing Open Educational Resources (OER) can save significant time and effort. The OPEN partners recommend TAACCCT grantees invest up-front time finding OER to reuse rather than starting development of new educational resources right away. A significant benefit of OER is that they provide source material to build your development efforts around. No need to invest development effort in creating something that already exists.

OER come in a wide variety of types. Many educators are simply looking for individual media elements to use within their courses, such as photos, graphics, videos, and audio, that are openly licensed in a way that freely permits education use.

The page below will help you find openly licensed media elements to use within your courses. To jump directly to what you are searching for use these links:
