On the Digital Literacy in Europe (DiLitE) project, we are working with partners in the Republic of Ireland (Meath Partnership), Spain (European Language Centre), Cyprus (Centre for Social innovation), Portugal (Mindshift) and Greece (Symplexis) to look at the relationships between adult education (in particular for adult migrants with low levels of education and/or basic literacy  digital literacies) and digital literacies, digital devices and practitioner engagement with these.

The project began in September 2019, and runs through to September 2021.

The phrase “adult learning theory” is much bandied about in corporate training circles. But, do you know what it actually means?

First, a myth-buster. There is NO one adult learning theory. There are several prevalent theories that all explain— from different perspectives—how adults learn.

In this article specifically we will address: 1) andragogy, 2) experiential learning, 3) transformational learning. There are many other theories though! However, all of them have one main goal: they help you create effective learning experiences for the adult corporate learner.

In 2016, a study was conducted at Georgetown University. It was found that since the end of the Great Recession in 2009, 11.6 million jobs were created [1]. Of those jobs, 8.4 million were snagged by adults with college degrees. Now, that’s not to say that there weren’t other factors involved in the hiring of these individuals. But, simply put, holding a college degree helped to put these workers’ resumes at the top of employers’ stacks.

Learning Should Be Fun: Gaming for Adult Learners

Learning Should Be Fun: Gaming for Adult Learners | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Twenty English language learners, gathered at an East Boston community-based organization, are playing a storytelling game on their mobile phones. After beating the game and receiving a check mark for a successful mission, the players return to a virtual world where they, as their avatars, mingle with players in Florida. They chat by typing messages and arrange to play a word-guessing game together.

This is English Innovations, a blended English language learning model combining a classroom environment with self-paced online tools. One of the tools, Xenos, uses single- and multi-player social games to help adults build English language skills. Overall, the model delivers a flexible learning environment for adult learners with jobs and families, keeping them immersed and engaged.

It’s an exciting model, but one that is all too rare.

In the past decade, more and more adults have elected to return to school with the desire of either completing a formal education (previously started), or pursuing additional education for purposes of personal development and/or to further their career. The format for this education, however, is not being sought in the form of the traditional on-campus, classroom environment. These adults are seeking out education which can be completed remotely and at a schedule more convenient for their busy schedules; this type of education is known as distance education.

Five Tips to Creating a More Engaging Online Course for Adult Learners | Faculty Focus

Five Tips to Creating a More Engaging Online Course for Adult Learners | Faculty Focus | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As society has evolved, so too has education. To meet the changing needs of our world, an explosion of online education has focused on adult learning. Adult education covers a wide range of topics, as many adult learners strive to improve their lives through professional development or changing careers (Mace and Bacon 2019).  For career fields that require hands-on work and interactions with clients, for example, online education presents a unique challenge for educating adult learners. Therefore, to reach these students, understanding appropriate educational models in an online format is essential (Diep et al. 2019). As society changes to include more online learning opportunities, the field of education must stay abreast of these shifts and use these strategies to provide the best education possible for new and longtime professionals. When teaching courses online, consider applying evidence-based strategies to improve engagement, satisfaction, and comprehension for your students of all ages. The following five tips have been developed from research geared toward pivoting live classes into effective online or blended learning courses.

Do Adults Learn Differently Than Students?

Do Adults Learn Differently Than Students? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There are many similarities to adults and students when it comes to learning. If you were an auditory learner in school, you probably still prefer that learning method [1]. If you were a verbal learner you still prefer that. Adults are able to learn from additional styles as they know what they need to pick out from training, and they know the impact it will have on their job if they do not. The motivation to learn is more relevant to adults than it is to students, but trainers need to be aware of learner preferences.

Play is what young children do, right? It’s not what we want students at university to be wasting their time doing. Or is it?

Play isn’t a waste of time. It delivers the same benefits for adults in higher education as it does for children: an opportunity to develop and practise skills, to reflect on things they have seen but not yet understood, and to deepen their learning, often constructing and developing mental models socially with their peers.

How adult learners are not getting 21st-century skills | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
More and more adults are going back to school to learn new skills. The National Center for Education Statistics data show a 7 percent growth in college enrollment for adults over the age of 24 between 2005 and 2015. This is projected to increase to 12 percent by 2019.

A large percent of these are community college students who are either enrolled in two-year associate’s degree programs or technical education certificates, or are simply taking classes to learn new skills. In spring 2016, over 2.1 million adults over the age of 24 were enrolled in two-year public community colleges. These students represent approximately one-third of all adult students enrolled in colleges.
