NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Library Edition | The New Media Consortium

NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Library Edition | The New Media Consortium | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The NMC Horizon Report: 2014 Library Edition, examines key trends, significant challenges, and emerging technologies for their potential impact on academic and research libraries worldwide. While there are many local factors affecting libraries, there are also issues that transcend regional boundaries and common questions; it was with these questions in mind that this report was created. The NMC Horizon Report: 2014 Library Edition was produced by the NMC in collaboration with University of Applied Sciences (HTW) Chur, Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) Hannover, and ETH-Bibliothek Zurich. To create the report, an international body of experts from library management, education, technology, and other fields was convened as a panel. Over the course of three months in the spring of 2014, the 2014 Horizon Project Library Expert Panel came to a consensus about the topics that would appear here in the NMC Horizon Report: 2014 Library Edition.

t’s clear that there is no set path to becoming a Librarian. Many Librarians will have started out with careers in other fields and ‘side stepped’ over into Librarianship. Others will have begun with an internship or as a Library Assistant following their undergraduate degree in order to get their foot in the door. So what does it take to build a successful library team?

Scanning the Library Horizon | Library Babel Fish @insidehighered

Scanning the Library Horizon | Library Babel Fish @insidehighered | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

It’s funny how much the popular image of libraries is highly traditional, considering how fascinated by the future librarians typically are and how quickly librarians embrace new technologies. References to shushing never seem to go away, and in an era when most of the library’s budget goes to licensed content, the firm belief that libraries are still mostly about books is hard to shake. We could fold into this the gendered nature of the image of librarians, who are imagined to be prim women of a certain age who wear buns and sensible shoes while doing hyper-clerical work whereas IT folks are inventive, adventurous young men with a deep knowledge of secret arts.  Yet despite the image (and I can’t wait to read a new book about it) librarians’ work is deeply tied to technology. Likewise, librarians seem to continually try to predict the future in terms of technological change, as they do in a special Horizon Report about library futures.
