Canadian youth are not as digitally literate as adults may think they are, according to new research released today by MediaSmarts. Though today's young people have grown up immersed in digital media, they still rely on parents and teachers to help them advance their skills in areas such as searching and verifying online information.

MediaSmarts, a Canadian not-for-profit organization, surveyed over 5,400 students in classrooms across the country on their Internet behaviours and attitudes for its Young Canadians in a Wired World study.

Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III: Online Privacy, Online Publicity

Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III: Online Privacy, Online Publicity | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Although students are generally well informed about protecting content about them that is posted online, there is a need for more education when it comes to corporate uses of their personal information. What students know – compared to what they think they know – about protecting their data, is fraught with contradictions.

Interesting report on Canadian teens. Stats and issues probably carry through internationally. Have a look at the executive summary for a quick read.

Look back in anger? A review of online learning in 2013

Look back in anger? A review of online learning in 2013 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

An increased push from government to use online learning for greater academic productivity

In Ontario, the Minister for Training, Colleges and Universities starkly presented the situation facing universities and colleges in Ontario over the next few years: take more students, produce better quality outcomes, but receive no more money, because there isn’t any. He challenged the institutions to look to technology to increase productivity. The Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario commissioned a report on online learning, productivity and quality.

“Teach, mark, move on: that’s the old paradigm. Today’s classrooms have changed. It is important to show the students where they are, how to improve, and where to go from here… It’s no longer about “this is your mark and that’s the end of the story”. ~ Secondary Teacher

Young Canadians in a Wired World, Phase III: Experts or Amateurs? Gauging Young Canadians’ Digital Literacy Skills | MediaSmarts | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This report is drawn from a national survey of Canadian youth conducted by MediaSmarts in 2013. The classroom-based survey of 5,436 students in grades 4 through 11, in every province and territory, examined the role of networked technologies in young people’s lives. Experts or Amateurs? Gauging Young Canadians’ Digital Literacy Skills (the fourth in a series of reports from the survey) explores the level of young people’s digital literacy skills, how they are learning these skills and how well digital technologies are being used in classrooms to support these skills.

Discussing design models for hybrid/ blended learning and the impact on the campus

Hybrid learning: the next big change in online learning?

Despite all the hype about MOOCs, hybrid learning is probably the most significant development in e-learning – or indeed in teaching generally – in post-secondary education, at least here in Canada. I am seeing many universities (13 in six months so far) developing plans or strategies to increase the amount of hybrid learning. The University of Ottawa for instance is aiming for 20% of all sections to be hybrid within five years (which its Board feared was ‘too timid’ a target.) UBC has just started a major development called its flexible learning initiative which aims to radically transform first and second year undergraduate teaching and reach out to new markets. Hybrid learning is a cornerstone of its strategy.
