PROOF POINTS: Survey reveals stark rich-poor divide in how U.S. children were taught remotely during the spring school closures

PROOF POINTS: Survey reveals stark rich-poor divide in how U.S. children were taught remotely during the spring school closures | Education in a Multicultural Society | Scoop.it

"As the coronavirus pandemic spread through the country, a common (socially distanced) conversation among friends and families compared how many hours of remote learning kids were getting. Preliminary results from a new survey of school districts confirm what many parents learned through the Zoom grapevine. The number of hours your kids got varied wildly depending on where you happen to live. But the amount of time was not the only difference, according to a recent survey: the type of instruction students received also diverged dramatically."

Tackling Digital Equity in the Classroom - Strategies for Teachers

Tackling Digital Equity in the Classroom - Strategies for Teachers | Education in a Multicultural Society | Scoop.it

"Thanks to initiatives such as the Federal E-Rate program, which provides discounted Internet access and funding for schools and districts, most students now have the ability to get online while in school. However, once students head home, they may lack high speed Internet as well as a device other than a smartphone, resulting in what policymakers now term the homework gap."

An interesting read in regard to inclusive learning strategies as well as the whole homework debate...is it really fair to expect those who are 'worse off' to complete the same digital based homework? My 2 sons' high school sets homework via OneNote - juggling computer time between all of us is challenging at times, but it's a bit much to expect each of us to have our own computer!

Can ‘Equity-Based Pricing’ Make Edtech Products More Accessible? | Education in a Multicultural Society | Scoop.it

"In Finland, a speeding ticket can cost six figures. That’s because the country, like several of its European neighbors, fines offenders a percentage of their income, instead of a flat rate. The idea is that the financial punishment ought to fit one’s privilege in society."

Good point.

Such a great article about how technology is not the most important thing in a classroom. I agree entirely with this article. Teacher have a very challenging job. They do not just work to meet the educational needs of every child, but also their emotional and social needs. Technology can not replace a teacher. Also having technology does not make your classroom an innovative class. Teachers are given devices but have not idea how to utilize them. They feel pressured to integrate it into their lessons but struggle when faced with other factors such as students with behavioral and emotional issues.

Asking The Wrong Questions About Equity in The Classroom

Asking The Wrong Questions About Equity in The Classroom | Education in a Multicultural Society | Scoop.it

"Asking the right questions is a skill. It requires insight driven by experience, a strong base of existing knowledge and deep understanding of the problem or discussion. It’s not easy to do. It is, though, a crucial part of the learning process. That’s why it saddens me that, on the subject of equity in education as recently reported in the New York Times, we’re collectively stuck asking questions we knew the answers to decades ago."
