Contemporary Approaches to University Teaching (HE) #MOOC | ED 262 KCKCC Sp '24 | Scoop.it
University teaching is a complex task. When we first start to teach, nothing is automatic. Everything has to be carefully thought through. This MOOC introduces new teachers to key learning and teaching concepts and strategies in easily studied, two hour modules - just in time, just for you. Modules cover topics like strategies to teach that first class, giving feedback, facilitating group work, and online teaching. Happy teaching.

While it's a longish course for a MOOC (19 weeks) it has a great reputation. It comes highly recommended for any entering tertiary teaching.

Wayne’s world: How universities are crushing academics

Wayne’s world: How universities are crushing academics | ED 262 KCKCC Sp '24 | Scoop.it

Exhibiting a dogmatic faith in metrics, higher education executives are being guided less by rational considerations about educational values and more by the “snake oils” of efficiency, profitability, and accountability. But these dark arts exact a price. Due to increasing competition for funds and jobs, and with the jobs themselves becoming increasingly precarious, universities have become “anxiety machines” for academics. What are universities for? If mainly teaching, can they sack academics for not meeting research targets?

Legislation governing universities varies from one to the other, often leaving their purpose undefined. But it certainly matters when determining an academic's duties in an unfair dismissal case.

How the new federal funds could help.

I’ve never heard a student or professor complain that a book didn’t cost enough. Complaints about textbook costs have been around at least since the 80’s, and probably before that I know because I remember making them myself. And yet, adoption of OER has been slower than many of us had hoped.(...) - Inside Higher Ed, by Matt Reed, 2018/03/28
